Trends Platform

Supporting Digital Transformation through the design and build of a world class personalised trends platform.

Our mission / brief

Working with the board and key team members at Foresight Factory we were asked to help lead the process of moving their industry leading trends data and analysis onto a custom built platform. The goals were to create first class editing and publication functionalities for the develpoment of trends analysis content natively online, and, to deliver world class search and content discovery services to their subscribers.

Our strategy

We ran a number of UX workshops with internal users and Foresight Factory clients to better understand user goals and journeys as well as content hierarchies and taxonomies used to categorise and find information across a large data set. We then set about creating a prototype search interface and tested this with users recruited from matching backgrounds to the main Foresight Factory client profiles. We used an iterative process as we worked through the UX for other aspects of the platform including content creation, subscriptions management, user sign up and purchase and interfaces with marketing touch points: building out further elements of the UI and back-end functionality and then refactoring and refining these with user testing.

In Detail

If you’re familiar with the world of market research, you may well have come across Future Foundation, or at least one of their publications/papers. Their core proposition is not dissimilar to the likes of Mintel or TNS Global, although FF’s distinguishing features include future trends and their quarterly physical events. We have been working with Future Foundation for the past 18 months to design and build their new trends platform to deliver rich data analysis and insights across 50+ industry sectors.

The platform has its own bespoke CMS to support the internal teams at Future Foundation in their daily content creation and is built out to support both enterprise and pay as you go licensing models. The platform uses the latest in search technology to enable blisteringly fast and scalable data retrieval. A number of external APIs allow clients to interrogate and consume data and content from the platform within their own internal tools. The platform also supports Single Sign On for enterprise integrations.

We have also included e-commerce support for monthly subscriptions targeted at individuals and small teams.

Results

The platform is now used by more than 5000 users across 450+ clients with over 25,000 items of active content. Customer retention has increased since the release of the new platform as has the volume of content being downloaded. Internal teams are able to create content natively as HTML5 as well as batch import existing powerpoint content improving the speed with which content can be created, categorised and published. We are currently working with Foresight Factory on the design, build and integration of an interactive data query tool in the platform as well as providing managed cloud services for the hosting, maintenance and support of the underlying architecture.
